The emergence of image-guided surgery has expanded its applications across various specialties, including neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. This evolution raises the question of whether specialized neurosurgeons are needed to address the complexities of these conditions. Methods: The article discusses the current landscape of functional neurosurgery and the challenges faced by neurosurgeons in managing neurodegenerative diseases. It highlights the necessity for specialized training and collaboration with other medical professionals, such as neurologists and neurophysiologists, to enhance patient care. Results: The article identifies a significant decline in the number of stereotactic surgeons dedicated to pain procedures, with other specialists increasingly encroaching on this field. It emphasizes the risks associated with untrained professionals performing complex surgeries and the need for a dedicated multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Conclusion: There is an urgent need for well-trained stereotactic surgeons to address the surgical treatment of patients with neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. The article advocates for enhanced education and training for neurosurgeons to meet the growing demand for specialized care in this area.
