Gordon"],"abstract":"Background: The United States faces a significant skills-jobs mismatch, particularly in STEM occupations, which are essential for various industries. This issue is exacerbated by the inadequacies of the current education-to-employment system, which fails to produce enough skilled workers for the high-tech economy. Methods: The article discusses initiatives launched in South Dakota, including the South Dakota Workforce Initiatives (SDWINS), aimed at addressing the skills gap. These initiatives involve partnerships for employee training, expanding apprenticeship programs, and providing career information through an online platform. Results: South Dakota's low unemployment rate contrasts with a high number of job vacancies, indicating a growing skills gap. The initiatives implemented have begun to raise awareness among local leaders about the need for a regional talent-delivery system to address workforce challenges. Conclusion: The skills gap is a pressing issue that requires collaboration between public and private sectors to develop effective training and educational programs. The establishment of Regional Talent Innovation Networks (RETAINs) is essential for fostering dialogue and creating a more integrated approach to workforce development.
