Recent findings suggest that natural aging conditions may contribute to AD, particularly through decreased cerebral blood flow (CBF), which affects neuronal energy and cognitive function. Summary: The application of the omentum to the brain has been proposed as a method to increase CBF and potentially improve cognition in AD patients. In a study involving 25 AD patients, nine exhibited significant cognitive improvement following omental surgery, while others showed minimal or no improvement. The results suggest that functional intracerebral neurons are crucial for cognitive enhancement, and the lack of improvement in some patients may be due to non-functioning neurons despite increased CBF. Conclusion: The findings indicate that increasing CBF via omental transposition may benefit some AD patients, but the overall effectiveness is contingent on the viability of the intracerebral neurons. Further research is warranted to explore this approach in a controlled setting, particularly focusing on patients with better cognitive function.
