The underlying causes of MetS remain unclear, as not all obese individuals develop this syndrome, and it can occur in lean individuals as well. Recent research has highlighted increased sympathetic nerve activity in MetS patients, suggesting a link between sympathetic overdrive and associated comorbidities. Summary: The article discusses the role of the autonomic nervous system in metabolic syndrome, proposing that the hepatorenal reflex may contribute to the condition. Evidence suggests that interventions such as bariatric surgery and calorie restriction can lead to rapid remission of MetS symptoms, independent of weight loss. The author argues that reducing nutrient contact with the gastrointestinal mucosa may alleviate the sympathetic tone and improve oxygen delivery to the liver. Conclusion: The commentary emphasizes the need for further research to understand the mechanisms behind metabolic syndrome and why some obese individuals remain metabolically healthy.
