It affects individuals of all ages and both sexes, leading to various symptoms including pain and dysfunction in the mandible, temporomandibular joints, and surrounding areas. Methods: The diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) involves a comprehensive clinical examination, medical and dental history, and imaging techniques such as radiographs, Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) scans, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Neuromuscular dentistry employs advanced technology, including Computerized Mandibular Scanning (CMS) and electromyography (EMG), to assess jaw positioning and muscle activity. Results: The integration of neuromuscular dentistry offers a more holistic approach to treating TMDs by focusing on the relationship between teeth, temporomandibular joints, and masticatory muscles. This method aims to establish a physiological rest position for the jaw, which can lead to more effective and lasting solutions for oro-facial pain. Conclusion: Chronic oro-facial pain, particularly TMD, is often influenced by psychosocial factors that can affect treatment outcomes. Dentists can enhance patient care by addressing these psychosocial aspects and providing appropriate referrals for counseling, thus improving overall management of chronic pain conditions.
