Hauptman"],"abstract":"Background: Neurosurgeons often experience prolonged wakefulness, which can lead to cognitive impairments. Previous neuroimaging studies have shown significant changes in brain activation during sleep deprivation, but the correlation with neuronal activity alterations remains unclear. This study investigates neuronal activity in the frontal motor cortex of awake rats under conditions of sleep deprivation. Methods: Vyazovskiy et al. recorded neuronal activity from ensembles in the deep layers of the frontal motor cortex of awake, behaving rats. They characterized neuronal activity during spontaneous awake and sleep states and monitored changes in activity during prolonged wakefulness. Results: The study found that prolonged wakefulness led to increased occurrences of 'off states' in neuronal activity, resembling patterns seen during NREM sleep. Additionally, when allowed to sleep, rats that had been awake the longest exhibited longer 'off states' during sleep, indicating a correlation between wakefulness duration and neuronal inactivity. Conclusion: The findings suggest that during extended periods of wakefulness, certain neurons may enter a state of inactivity while the animal remains awake. This highlights the potential for neuronal fatigue and raises questions about the effects of interventions, such as caffeine, on neuronal activity during sleep deprivation.
