Hickey"],"abstract":"Background: The 1870s marked the inception of neurological nursing, initiated by Sir Victor Horsley who invited nurses to observe neurosurgery for improved postoperative care. This period saw the emergence of neurological nursing as a subspecialty, influenced by informal education from physicians in Europe and the United States. The intertwining of neurology and psychiatry during this time laid the groundwork for the future development of specialized nursing care in these fields. Methods: This article provides a historical overview of the evolution of neuroscience nursing, highlighting key figures, institutions, and milestones that contributed to its development. It discusses the transition from informal education to formalized training and the establishment of specialized care units for neurological patients. Results: The establishment of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses and the introduction of certification examinations marked significant advancements in the field. The development of critical care units and the introduction of invasive monitoring technologies in the 1970s further shaped the practice of neuroscience nursing, emphasizing the importance of observational skills and holistic patient care. Conclusion: Neuroscience nursing has evolved significantly, driven by advancements in technology and the need for specialized care. The future of this field will likely include more individualized care approaches, yet the core competencies of observation, clinical reasoning, and compassion will remain essential.
