Patients with brain metastases, by definition, have stage IV cancer, which presents a unique clinical challenge in treatment decision-making. The survival rates for brain metastases differ from those of glioblastoma, complicating treatment choices. Methods: This article serves as an introduction to a supplement on brain metastases, aiming to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge in this area. It emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing brain metastases, integrating insights from medical oncology and radiation oncology. Results: The supplement aims to enhance understanding of brain metastases through a collection of reviews covering development, epidemiology, pathology, treatment options, and future directions. It highlights the necessity for neurosurgeons to engage in collaborative decision-making to optimize patient care. Conclusion: The overarching goal of this supplement is to equip the neurosurgical community with diverse perspectives on brain metastases. By fostering a consensus-driven approach within multidisciplinary teams, the supplement seeks to improve evidence-based decision-making in the treatment of patients with brain metastases.
