In Pakistan, the cultural context complicates the mentor-trainee relationship, often leading to unbalanced dynamics that hinder effective communication and growth. The ethical dimensions of mentoring are influenced by societal norms, which can create barriers to fostering a supportive educational environment. Methods: This article discusses the ethical aspects of mentoring in postgraduate surgical training based on the authors' experiences as health professionals in Pakistan. It examines the existing mentoring frameworks within the country's surgical training programs and highlights the challenges faced in establishing effective mentor-mentee relationships. Results: The study reveals that current mentoring practices in Pakistan are often inadequately defined, with mentors frequently overwhelmed by their responsibilities, leading to a focus on training completion rather than mentorship. The lack of structured roles and responsibilities for mentors contributes to a suboptimal training environment, which can adversely affect trainee performance and professional development. Conclusion: Despite the challenges, mentorship remains vital for the development of competent medical practitioners in Pakistan. A well-defined and ethically grounded mentor-mentee relationship can enhance both personal and professional growth, underscoring the need for improved mentoring programs and training for mentors.
