However, they provide limited evidence to support their claims that such consumption leads to brain damage. The assertion that all addictions result in anatomical and pathological changes is challenged, particularly in the context of pornography use. Methods: The article critiques the methodologies of studies cited by Hilton and Watts, emphasizing that many rely on cross-sectional designs which do not allow for causal inferences. It discusses the limitations of neuroimaging studies and the need for clearer definitions and parameters regarding what constitutes addiction and its effects on the brain. Results: The findings indicate that while some studies suggest executive deficits in hypersexual individuals, actual performance assessments do not show significant differences compared to healthy controls. The research also highlights that hypersexuality may represent a distinct phenomenon rather than a form of addiction, as evidenced by the psychological profiles of hypersexual men. Conclusion: The article concludes that the current literature does not support the notion that excessive pornography consumption is analogous to substance-related disorders or causes significant brain atrophy. It calls for more nuanced research into the psychological and behavioral aspects of hypersexuality, rather than conflating it with addiction.
