Smith"],"abstract":"Background: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) may affect neurocognitive function in youths, which remains a topic of ongoing debate. This study aimed to evaluate neurocognitive functioning in pediatric trauma patients using a computerized assessment tool, CNS Vital Sign (CNSVS), comparing mTBI patients with orthopedic injury controls. Methods: The authors conducted a comparison of neurocognitive functioning between a group of youths with mTBI and a control group with orthopedic injuries. The CNSVS was utilized to assess cognitive abilities across three domains: verbal memory, cognitive flexibility, and reaction time. Results: The study found no significant difference in verbal memory scores between the mTBI and control groups. However, the mTBI group exhibited significantly poorer performance on cognitive flexibility and reaction time tasks, indicating slower psychomotor speeds despite normal Glasgow coma scale scores and neuroimaging findings. Conclusion: The findings suggest that youths with mTBI may experience measurable neurocognitive dysfunction, particularly in psychomotor speed and reaction time. Further research is needed to explore the clinical relevance of these findings and to develop appropriate management strategies for mTBI.
