Mansoor"],"abstract":"Background: In developing countries like Pakistan, healthcare often prioritizes curative medicine over preventive strategies, particularly in the context of spinal cord injuries (SCIs). Many patients present with complete neurological deficits that cannot be reversed by current surgical or pharmacological interventions, highlighting the need for effective non-operative management. Methods: This article discusses the challenges and observations related to the management of SCIs in Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of patient education and the socioeconomic factors influencing treatment decisions. It also critiques the timing of surgical interventions, which often occur weeks after injury. Results: The findings suggest that non-operative management may be more beneficial and cost-effective than surgical stabilization for patients with complete neurological deficits. The authors note that many patients do not receive adequate counseling about the limitations of surgical interventions, leading to misconceptions about potential recovery. Conclusion: The authors advocate for a shift in focus towards non-operative management for traumatic complete SCIs in Pakistan, alongside improvements in pre-hospital care, patient education, and the establishment of a national trauma registry. They emphasize that a comprehensive approach is necessary to enhance long-term outcomes and quality of life for these patients.
