The author recounts a personal experience as a surgical resident that sparked a longstanding interest in improving DVT and PE prevention strategies. This experience led to the exploration of increasing venous velocity in the lower extremities as a potential solution. Summary: The author describes the development of the Pedi-Pulsor, a device designed to enhance venous blood flow through plantar and dorsi flexion of the feet. Clinical studies demonstrated a significant reduction in DVT incidence among patients using the Pedi-Pulsor compared to control groups. Despite its potential, the device was not commercialized, and subsequent governmental initiatives to address thromboembolism have not yielded significant advancements. Conclusion: The author advocates for renewed governmental involvement in the development of effective thromboembolism prevention devices, suggesting that such efforts could lead to significant improvements in patient outcomes.
