The reliance on digital communication has replaced direct interpersonal interactions, potentially compromising patient safety. Subtle nuances in patient information that are critical for outcomes may be lost in this transition. Methods: This article discusses the impact of communication breakdowns among healthcare providers and highlights the importance of direct contact over digital communication. It references a study on shift change handovers in France, which assessed the quality of communication during handovers among healthcare professionals. Results: The study indicated that reduced or eliminated shift change handovers negatively impacted the efficiency, team function, and quality of care. Interruptions during handovers were significant, consuming a notable portion of working time for nurses, aides, and physicians. Conclusion: Improving interpersonal communication among healthcare providers is essential for enhancing patient outcomes and reducing workplace stress. A return to direct communication methods is advocated to foster better collaboration and patient care.
