{"id":"09bb3759-5547-450d-8f05-fac124e01dea","slug":"the-micrornas-small-size-big-value","title":"The microRNAs: Small size, big value,…","authors":["Ihsan Solaroglu","John H Zhang"],"abstract":"Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as critical regulators in various pathological processes, including neuronal development, apoptosis, inflammation, and angiogenesis. Their roles in brain tumor development, particularly in gliomas and medulloblastomas, have garnered significant attention, revealing their potential as both tumor suppressors and oncogenes. Methods: This article reviews recent studies that explore the mechanisms by which miRNAs influence glioma and medulloblastoma biology, focusing on their interactions with key signaling pathways such as EGFR, PI3K/Akt, and Notch. The review also discusses the implications of miRNA expression on tumor growth, prognosis, and treatment response. Results: Findings indicate that specific miRNAs, such as miR-7 and miR-124, play pivotal roles in regulating critical pathways involved in tumorigenesis. For instance, miR-7 directly inhibits EGFR and the Akt pathway, while miR-124 regulates CDK6 expression in medulloblastoma, linking miRNA expression to tumor aggressiveness and patient prognosis. Conclusion: Understanding the biogenesis and functional mechanisms of miRNAs in brain tumors could lead to novel therapeutic strategies and improve clinical management of these devastating conditions. However, further research is necessary to fully elucidate their roles and potential applications in neurosurgery.
