Since 2010, Surgical Neurology International® (SNI) has been actively engaged in spreading knowledge about CNS pathologies that concern us all. In SNI, there are papers read by neurosurgeons, neurologists, epidemiologists, and researchers from every country. Our combined personal experience with people all over the world and particularly in low- and middle-income nations (LMICs) has taught us that there are smart and creative people from all over the world. Medicine and neurosurgery cannot ignore the vast clinical experience and expertise of junior and senior neurosurgeons from LMIC.

In 2021, we expanded the platform of SNI and organized a 2-day educational summit on neurosurgical sub-specialties under a new educational system sponsored by SNI Digital. The speakers were from across the globe. The contribution from neurosurgeons from LMIC was impressive. We observed that neurosurgeons from high-income countries engaged in conversations with colleagues from LMIC independently of the presumed technology gap. Speakers from around the globe exchanged ideas in regard to treatment of trauma, spine disease, epilepsy, and pediatric neuro-oncology, vascular, and functional disease. They opened channels of information not explored by the conventional roads such as journals and static meetings. Discussion of information was more important than just more information and led to broader perspectives on each subject. Click on snidigital.org to see the Website.

In over 100 trial programs, SNI Digital has sponsored global teaching of neurosurgeons including young neurosurgeons and students (YNSS), many from LMIC. These programs include interactive lectures, research reviews and student presentations, grand rounds, and case discussions, with a local and international faculty for people of all ages. The organization of country-wide meetings for neurosurgeons has been successfully achieved. Joint research projects among international participants have led to published work. All of the meetings have been conducted using the Zoom platform with discussions among the attendees and will be posted on SNI Digital in the early 2023. Certificates of Participation will be available for all content.

Two of our faculty, Dr. Samer Hoz and Dr. Jorge Lazareff, have developed popular lecture series, research projects, and mentoring programs targeted at YNSS with an interest in clinical neurosciences, which have resulted in exposure to broader worldwide knowledge, and to role models for those who appreciate that guidance.

Our SNI Digital Board is currently preparing programs on career mentoring and job preparation on how to initiate research and write about its findings. Besides clinical subjects, SNI Digital plans sessions on Neurosurgery as a Business, Managing People, Starting a Practice, Leading a Group, and Heading a Department.

In one site, SNI Digital provides the user a broad exposure to multiple expert global opinions, with the most efficient and best use of time, which would take many hours and considerable money to assemble individually from multiple other internet sources.

This budding project is a newly developing international communication program that can be expanded or changed according to the volunteers’ input and the needs of our audience. You define your time commitment, and we will find a place for you in our programs.

SNI and SNI Digital are looking for volunteers worldwide in this effort to help people around the world. If these concepts interest you, please contact Jim Ausman. Click on ausman@snidigital.org to send an email and discuss your goals and ideas about how we can expand the exchange of knowledge from and to every country and help our patients. Grow with us in this new experience.
