Surgical management of vertebral metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumor: Case illustration, literature review, and pooled analysis

Yu Tung Lo, David Siu Kei Mak, Colum Patrick Nolan

Date of publication: 15-Oct-2020

Background: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) very rarely metastasize to the vertebrae. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) confer favorable long-term survival and durable disease control for metastatic disease. Here, we reviewed a case and the literature to determine the various management options, and neurological outcomes for these patients.

Radionuclide tumor necrosis factor-alpha activity in herniated lumbar disc correlates with severe leg pain

Pablo Andrade, Jasper van Aalst, Matthias Bauwens, Andreas Vogg, Marinus J. van Kroonenburgh, Felix M. Mottaghy, Onno P. Teernstra, Govert Hoogland

Date of publication: 15-Oct-2020

Background: Lumbar disc herniation is often associated with an inflammatory process. In this context, inflammation has been considered a key factor in the modulation of pain. Here, we present a case of inflammatory activity directly documented in a patient with a lumbar disc herniation.

Successful mechanical thrombectomy using a combined technique for internal carotid artery occlusion with persistent primitive trigeminal artery

Yoshinobu Horio, Kenji Fukuda, Takaya Yoshinaga, Ryuhei Takeyama, Hironori Fukumoto, Kiminori Sato, Yoshihisa Kawano, Tooru Inoue

Date of publication: 15-Oct-2020

Background: The prevalence of persistent primitive trigeminal artery (PPTA) has been reported to be 0.1–0.6%. We report the successful recanalization of internal carotid artery (ICA) without embolization to new vascular territory (ENT) using a combined technique in a case of ICA occlusion with PPTA.

Endoscopic-assisted paramedian infratentorial supracerebellar approach for pineal cyst – How I do it Video clip

Riki Tanaka, Kazuhito Takeuchi, Ahmed Ansari, Kento Sasaki, Kyosuke Miyatani, Yasuhiro Yamada, Tsukasa Kawase, Yoko Kato, Akihiko Horiguchi

Date of publication: 15-Oct-2020

Background: The endoscopic supracerebellar-infratentorial (SCIT) approach is a viable method to access pathology of the posterior incisura, but a narrow working space and frequent instrument conflict can potentially limit its surgical efficacy. We planned an endoscopic-assisted paramedian infratentorial supracerebellar approach for pineal cyst.

Parte I: Anatomía microquirúrgica tridimensional de la ínsula

Gustavo Rassier Isolan, Alvaro Campero, Pablo Ajler, Edgar Manuel Farina, Thomas More Frigeri, Leandro Infantini Dini

Date of publication: 15-Oct-2020

Technical nuances of a posterior-only L5 vertebrectomy with anterior column reconstruction

Lukasz Bogdan, Michael Galgano

Date of publication: 08-Oct-2020

Background: Burst fractures involving the L5 vertebra are quite rare . They can be managed with anterior, posterior, or combined 360 approaches. Here, we report a 25-year-old female who presented with a traumatic cauda equina syndrome attributed to an L5 burst fracture following a motor vehicle accident, and who did well after a posterior-only decompression/fusion.

Late-onset occlusion of the Monro foramina after endoscopic third ventriculostomy in adults: Case discussion and review of the literature

Sara Fabbro, Francesco Tuniz, Daniele Piccolo, Antonio Cramaro

Date of publication: 08-Oct-2020

Background: Few cases of adult idiopathic occlusion of the foramen of Monro (AIOFM) are described in the literature. The diagnosis of AIOFM after an endoscopic procedure is even more infrequent.

Spinal cord herniation following multilevel anterior cervical discectomy and fusion: A case report and literature review

Siddharth Sinha, K. Joshi George

Date of publication: 08-Oct-2020

Background: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is one of the most commonly performed spinal operations. Spinal cord herniation following these procedures is rare, more typically being described as occurring posteriorly rather than following anterior corpectomy and fusion (e.g., reported in four corpectomy cases). Here, we describe a case in which spinal cord herniation was attributed to a three-level ACDF.

The relationship between vascular endothelial growth factor and histological grade in intracranial meningioma

Rafael Contage Winter, Apio Claudio Martins Antunes, Francine Hehn de Oliveira

Date of publication: 08-Oct-2020

Background: Meningioma is the most common benign intracranial neoplasm, accounting for 30% of all primary brain tumors. In 90% of cases, meningiomas are benign. Several aspects of molecular biology, including potential biomarkers, have been studied in attempts to better understand the natural history of meningiomas. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a biomarker responsible for inducing physiological and pathological angiogenesis. VEGF expression has been investigated as a potential predictor of several tumor aspects, including growth rate, recurrence rate, brain tissue invasion, peritumoral edema and surgical prognosis, and also as a marker of histological grade. However, there is no consensus in the literature with respect to the association between this biological factor and meningioma. We digitally analyzed immunohistochemical images using ImageJ software with the aim of correlating VEGF expression with tumor histology.
